What are Blog Income Reports

Blog Income Reports range from humble beginnings to mind-boggling figures. For instance, a newbie blogger may share an income report showing a few dollars earned in their first month. Fast forward a couple of years, and the same blogger might be revealing how they’re pulling in five or six figures monthly. The growth potential in blogging is truly vast.

However, while examining these Blog Income Reports, it’s crucial to remember that they reflect the result of hard work, dedication, and strategic decision-making. Blogging is not a ‘get rich quick’ scheme and making money blogging isn’t easy.

It requires consistent effort, patience, and a willingness to learn and adapt. The bloggers behind these impressive income reports have likely spent years honing their craft, improving their SEO knowledge, crafting valuable content, and building relationships with their readers (and advertising and affiliate partners).

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the optimisation of your content in the hopes that it will rank on page one of Google or other search engines

It is also important when reading a blogging income report to understand that it is usually only one side of an equation. Running a profitable online business is NOT without blogging expenses, and blogging income reports often omit expenses and taxes, making it ambiguous what the blogger earnings actually are at the end of the day.

For example, I have found with running my own blog and when starting a new blog there are costs for

  • Web hosting and domain registration
  • Graphic design
  • Copywriters
  • Editors
  • SEO tools
  • Virtual assistants
  • Technical Support

Another key takeaway from these income reports is the concept of passive income. Many bloggers earn a significant portion of their revenue from posts they wrote months or even years ago. This illustrates the beauty of blogging as an income stream – the potential for your efforts to yield long-term, passive returns.

Perhaps passive income should be referred to as ‘Front end load income’ – as just like with investing, it takes time to build up – a good quality blog post can take days or even weeks to write!

Why do bloggers post income reports?

Bloggers post monthly income reports to the online world for a variety of reasons. Some like to use it as a form of journalling to keep track of their progress, Some want to keep themselves accountable to their community, and some do it to add transparency to their blog and make it clear to their audience how their business model works.

Whilst I don’t personally post blog income reports for my website portfolio, I did post regular monthly net wealth updates on my journey to Financial Independence, for a similar reason.

I might also add, somewhat cynically, that many of these blog income report posts also are used for ‘social proof’ for affiliate marketing and course sales – many bloggers use their income reports to give credibility and drive traffic to their ‘How to make money online’ articles loaded with affiliate links for blogging products.

Even more ‘successful bloggers’ may use it to drive sales for their ‘how to make money blogging’ courses – which in turn, create them MORE blog income which they can then post about next month! haha. I might add this does sound rather negative, but provided they are good courses and people are getting value from them, its all above board!

For many bloggers, income comes from diverse sources like sponsored content, ad networks such as Google AdSense, affiliate income (affiliate marketing), selling digital products and courses, or offering services.

How do bloggers make money?

Notably, Blog Income Reports typically break down the blogger’s various streams of revenue, which gives you an idea of what blogging income actually looks like.

For many bloggers, income comes from diverse sources like sponsored content, ad networks such as Google AdSense, Ezoic, Mediavine, and AdThrive (now Raptive), affiliate income (affiliate marketing), selling digital products and courses, or offering services. Seeing the income broken down this way provides a clear roadmap for new bloggers looking to monetize their efforts.

Display Advertising Networks

Display Advertising Networks are organizations or programs which connect advertisers who want to run display ads with publishers (i.e. bloggers) who want to display them. Display Advertising Networks act as intermediaries or ‘ad brokers’, providing the tools for setting up and managing ad campaigns, serving relevant ads that are optimized for the publisher’s content or the audience’s cookies (browser history), tracking performance, handling issues, and managing payments.

They take a cut of the ad revenue.

Google Adsense, Ezoic, Mediavine, and Adthrive (now Raptive) are the four largest and most popular Display Advertising Networks that bloggers use for ad income.

Google AdSense is the largest program, run by Google through which website publishers in the Google AdSense Network of content sites serve text, images, video, or interactive media advertisements that are targeted to the site content and audience.

Ezoic, Mediavine, and AdThrive (Raptive) are similar to AdSense but typically have different requirements for website traffic levels and content. They typically offer better revenue for publishers compared to AdSense.

Affiliate Marketing Programs

Affiliate marketing programs are arrangements in which an online merchant pays a commission to an affiliate (typically a blogger or other online entity) for traffic or sales generated from its referrals. Affiliates earn a fee when a visitor clicks through their unique affiliate link and performs a specific action – often making a purchase, but sometimes even just signing up.

Bloggers are given a unique affiliate link which is tracked for a period of time – often 30 days. If a purchaser clicks through a bloggers link within this ‘cookie period’, then any sales are credited to the blogger and they can earn anywhere from 1% to 50% commission of the sales value.

Some popular affiliate marketing programs that most bloggers use to earn blogging revenue from include;

  • Amazon Associates
  • ShareaSale
  • Click Junction
  • Impact
  • Commission Junction
  • ClickBank
  • Rakuten
  • Awin

There are literally millions of bespoke affiliate marketing programs out there, for almost anything you can think about – from kitchen appliances and pets through to saving money and personal finance, to SEO tools, and even for blogging business courses!

Sponsored posts, also known as promoted posts, are articles or pieces of content that a blogger, publisher, content creator or website owner is paid to publish on their website or media profile by a company. These posts typically promote a product, service, or brand and are a form of advertising and must be disclosed.

These posts are generally used to increase the visibility of a product, service, or brand. They may include reviews, descriptions, or tutorials related to what’s being promoted.

Promoted posts can come in many forms, including news articles, blog posts, videos, social media posts, and more. They are used extensively on social media; for example on Instagram, top influencers like Kim Kardashian and Cristiano Ronaldo are paid over (USD) $1 Million per sponsored post.

Some sponsors request links back to the sponsor’s website. However, to comply with search engine guidelines, these links should usually be marked as “nofollow” or “sponsored” to indicate that they shouldn’t influence the website’s ranking in search results.

Selling Services

Bloggers may offer services related to their area of expertise, such as consulting, coaching, freelance writing, web design, search engine optimisation or social media management.

Selling Merchandise – eCommerce

Selling merchandise is another way that bloggers can monetize their blogs, particularly if they’ve established a strong brand and have a dedicated following. At its simplest, this could be something like branded mugs and print-on-demand t-shirts which are produced through an intermediary such as RedBubble.

Larger bloggers who have attracted a lot of fame online will typically set up a shop on their blog where readers can view and purchase their merchandise. This can be done through eCommerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce for WordPress, or integrated eCommerce solutions provided by various blogging platforms.

They can use techniques such as drop-shipping and Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA), or even set up their own inventory management system.

By selling merchandise, bloggers can not only generate additional income but also deepen their connection with their audience. Fans of the blog often enjoy the opportunity to show their support by purchasing and using branded items. A great example of this is Mr Beast.

Selling Digital Products

Bloggers can make income by selling Digital Products through their blog. Digital products have the advantage of being created once and sold indefinitely without any physical production or distribution costs. This includes things like

  • eBooks
  • Printables
  • Photography or Digital art
  • Tools – software, apps or plugins
  • Music or sound effects
  • Membership and subscriptions
  • Online courses and Webinars

This leads me to the next way bloggers make money online – by selling online courses

Selling online courses

Selling online courses has become an increasingly popular method of generating income, thanks to the growth of e-learning – projected to become a $350 Billion dollar annual industry by 2025! This can be an incredibly lucrative venture, given the demand for knowledge in various fields, from technical skills like programming to creative arts, hobbies and personal development.

Selling online courses requires a substantial upfront investment of time and effort, but with high-quality content and a strategic approach to marketing and engagement, it can be a rewarding way to share your expertise and generate income.

Selling online courses has become an increasingly popular method of generating income, thanks to the growth of e-learning.

Many successful blogs use online course sales to generate revenue and, interestingly enough, use affiliate programs to help promote their courses. This means other bloggers can make affiliate earnings from promoting their courses and sending their blog traffic over to increase their digital product sales.

I don’t mean to denigrate course sales – Heck, when I was a beginner blogger and had just started blogging, I wasn’t really sure of what I was doing for all of my blogging efforts and enthusiasm. I was able to improve my blogging journey and make more money by learning valuable information from an online blogging course that focused on things like;

  • Posting relevant content by understanding Keyword Research
  • Using correct Search Engine Optimisation techniques
  • Learning email marketing and growing an email list
  • Learning affiliate marketing strategies
  • Leveraging sponsored posts (blog and social media posts)
  • Using optimized landing pages

This has led to increased page views and, ultimately more blogging income allowing me to become a full time blogger.

Selling Subscriptions or Memberships

Similar to online courses, bloggers can make money online by selling subscriptions or memberships for things like premium content, access to valuable information or networks, or even subscriptions for using or licensing their digital tools.

How Top Bloggers Are Making Money

I have recognized a pattern that the top bloggers are usually making the most money through a combination of;

  1. Digital course sales (own product sales)
  2. Affiliate marketing income
  3. Sponsored content

They typically also have appreciable display advertising income, as well as streams of income from all of the monetization methods discussed earlier.

Which types of blogs make the most money?

Blogs in the business, entrepreneurship and personal finance niche make the most money, with the highest CPM and RPMs, lucrative high ticket affiliate marketing opportunities, as well as potential for sponsored posts and online course sales.

Final Thoughts on Blogger Income Reports

Blog income reports can be an inspiring and educational resource for those interested in creating and monetizing their own blogs. They offer transparency into the earnings potential in the blogging world, showcasing that making a substantial income through blogging is indeed possible.

The reports also provide insight into the diverse range of revenue streams that bloggers can leverage, from advertising and affiliate marketing to selling products or services.

However, it’s important to remember that these reports often represent the results of years of hard work and dedication. Successful blogging involves a significant investment of time and effort in creating quality content, building an audience, optimizing for search engines, and managing various monetization strategies.

Remember also, a blog income report is only as good as the author. Not every blogger publishes a blog income report the same way, to the same standards and transparency. Often they omit critical information such as blogging expenses and taxes, or the specific individual blogging income streams. Bloggers may also own multiple blogs – so it isn’t actually always clear how much one blog or specific blog post is making from the income report.

Also, while some bloggers may earn substantial amounts, income can vary widely depending on the blog’s niche, the blogger’s skills and experience, and other factors. As such, aspiring bloggers should not see these income reports as a guarantee of earnings, but as an indicator of what’s possible with persistence, creativity, and strategic planning.

This is something I have learned personally from my own progress blogging about personal finance and with my portfolio of websites.

Finally, while the financial aspects are important, successful blogging also involves a passion for the topic and a genuine desire to share knowledge and connect with readers. The most successful bloggers often see the financial rewards as a bonus, rather than the primary goal.

Therefore, it’s important to choose a blog topic that you’re passionate about and enjoy writing about, not just one that you think will be profitable.

Frequently Asked Questions about Blogging and Blog Income Reports
